BEFORE YOU REACH OUT...

We know many of you have important questions—and we’re grateful you care enough to ask them. As a small, mostly volunteer-run organization with limited resources, we simply don’t have the capacity to respond to every call, message, or email right away. This FAQ is designed to give you quick, clear answers to the questions we receive most often, and in many cases, it’s the fastest way to get the information you need. Please take a moment to read through before contacting us—your time (and ours) matters, and this helps us focus our limited energy where it’s needed most: caring for animals in our community.
I FOUND A STRAY ANIMAL. CAN YOU HELP?
Due to limited funding and resources, our ability to take in animals is fully dependent on how many we’re currently caring for and/or whether or not we have an available foster home that can help. If we are unable to take the animal in, please call Okmulgee Animal Control at 918-756-3511 or try another local area rescue (please see list at the bottom of this page), but if at all possible, please first take a photo of the animal and post to local Facebook groups to see if it belongs to a member of our local community. Animals picked up by the Okmulgee ACO are not held long before euthanasia and most local area rescues are inundated with the homeless cat and dog crisis currently happening in our area.

I FOUND AN INJURED ANIMAL. WHAT CAN I DO?
OKCO Humane Society receives limited quarterly funding for community medical assistance. Depending on budget, we may be able to take the animal in and help. Please contact us but do keep in mind, our messages are checked only at periodic intervals throughout the week so if this is an emergency situation and the animal is in obvious distress, please contact Animal Control at 918-756-3511 or try contacting another local area rescue. Please see list at the bottom of this page.

THERE IS A GROWING STRAY CAT POPULATION NEAR MY HOME. HELP!
Our ability to TNR (trap, neuter, release) stray and feral cats depends on the funds we have available for our Neuterhood Watch initiative. Please help spread the word about this cause so we can help curb the feral cat population in Okmulgee County. With your permission, we may ask to share your specific situation with our followers to help raise funds and awareness. Please contact us for more information and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

I LOST MY PET. DID YOU PICK THEM UP?
OKCO Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and operates separately from the City of Okmulgee Animal Shelter. We are not funded by the city and we do not pick up or hold lost animals. Please contact Okmulgee Animal Control immediately through the police station at 918-756-3511 for assistance.

I NEED TO REHOME MY ANIMAL. CAN YOU TAKE IT?
Due to limited finding and resources, our ability to take in animals is fully dependent on how many we’re currently caring for and/or whether or not we have an available foster home that can help. If we are on an intake hold, it’s possible we can still work with you to try and find your pet a new home so long as you can continue caring for it in the meantime. Please contact us for more information.

I WOULD LIKE TO GET MY PET SPAYED/NEUTERED BUT CAN’T AFFORD IT. CAN YOU HELP?
Thank you for helping our community control the homeless pet population in Okmulgee County. Dripping Springs Pet Hospital is offering low cost spay/neuter and vaccines, please reach out to them directly for information and to schedule. (918) 756-8536. Other options include Tulsa SPCA and Spay Oklahoma. All are trusted resources for low-cost spay/neuter services. Please note that Additional fees may apply. Further resources can be found at the bottom of this page.

I’M STRUGGLING TO GET FOOD FOR MY PETS. CAN YOU HELP?
As donations allow and whenever possible, we provide pet food to help keep pets with their families. Let us know if you need a bag and we'll let you know if we have stock available and the possible times for pickup. Please note that at this time, we’re only able to distribute donated pet food, litter, and other supplies by pickup from our storage container located in front of our future Adoption Center in downtown Okmulgee. Unfortunately, we don’t have the staff or resources to offer home delivery, and for safety reasons, our volunteers aren’t permitted to make personal deliveries. We completely understand that transportation can sometimes be a challenge, but all supply donations must be picked up at the designated time we arrange.

WHY DON’T YOU ANSWER THE PHONE?
We realize this can be frustrating but Okmulgee County Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with limited funding and resources. Most of the work being done behind the scenes is being done in a part-time and volunteer capacity. This means that it’s not practical or possible at the moment to have a staff member monitoring and answering incoming calls but we do try and respond to messages as soon as we can. Thank you for your patience and compassion. Explore our website to learn more about volunteering or donating to our cause.

HOW IS OKMULGEE COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY FUNDED?
OKCO Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and we are 100% donor funded. With zero taxpayer funding, we are entirely powered by grants and individual donations from caring and compassionate individuals like you. The kind and amount of work we can do in the community is entirely dependent on the level of funding and resources we receive. If you’d like to donate to this worthy cause, please click here to learn more.

I THINK I’D LIKE TO BECOME A FOSTER FOR ANIMALS IN NEED. WHAT DOES THAT ENTAIL?
That’s great! Our fosters help in huge ways by giving our animals a temporary home until they find a permanent one. Without fosters we are limited in how many animals we can care for and even when we can take in an animal, there are valid concerns about the length of time they can remain confined in boarding before it begins affecting their mental health and well-being. This is why even short-term fosters are important! Whether you can take an animal for a night, a weekend, a week, a month or until the animal is adopted, whatever you can do is appreciated. Truly, there is no foster time too short for our sweet animals awaiting adoption. You can be the key to greatly improving their quality of life during a period of uncertainty and transition in their journey.

Fostering is also a great way to give a pet you’re considering adopting a try before committing to adoption should you have any apprehensions or concerns. We provide everything you need: food, supplies, and vet care. Ready to give fostering a try? Click here.
