Veterinary Technician & Animal Care Specialist

Position Type: Full-Time/Salary
Position Location: Onsite
Reports To: Adoption and Animal Care Lead

Position Summary
The Veterinary Technician & Animal Care Specialist is responsible for supporting the health, well-being, and daily care of animals housed at the shelter. This position assists with medical intake procedures, animal monitoring, medication administration, client interaction, clerical support, and maintaining a clean and safe environment for animals, staff, and visitors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Administer vaccinations to intake animals in accordance with shelter protocols
  • Process approved animal surrender appointments and complete intake documentation
  • Monitor the health and behavior of animals in shelter care and report concerns promptly
  • Administer medications and treatments as directed
  • Assist in the reception area during public open hours, including customer service and answering phones
  • Perform clerical tasks such as filing, record keeping, and data entry
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of animal areas, kennels, cages, and common spaces
  • Assist with feeding, watering, and daily care of shelter animals
  • Follow all shelter safety and animal handling procedures
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management

Qualifications
  • Experience in veterinary care, animal sheltering, or animal handling preferred
  • Ability to safely handle animals of varying sizes and temperaments
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Comfortable performing physical tasks including lifting, bending, cleaning, and standing for extended periods
  • Compassion for animals and commitment to humane care

Work Environment
This position works in a shelter environment with frequent exposure to animals, cleaning chemicals, noise, and varying activity levels. Weekend, holiday, and occasional evening work may be required.

Program and Outreach Coordinator

Position Type: Part-Time/Hourly
Position Location: Onsite + Remote Work As Needed

Reports To: Executive Director or Shelter Operations Manager

Position Summary: The Outreach Coordinator is responsible for managing the organization’s foster network and volunteer program. This position plays a key role in supporting animal welfare efforts by recruiting, training, and communicating with foster families and volunteers while helping ensure animals are placed in safe and supportive foster homes. The Outreach Coordinator also assists with community outreach and fundraising events, supports adoption and public engagement activities, and helps strengthen community involvement with the organization’s mission.

The ideal candidate is organized, compassionate, dependable, and able to build positive relationships with volunteers, foster caregivers, staff, and the public.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Recruit, screen, and train foster families and volunteers
  • Coordinate placement of animals into appropriate foster homes
  • Maintain regular communication with foster families regarding animal care, medical needs, and shelter updates
  • Provide foster families with necessary supplies, resources, and support
  • Manage volunteer onboarding, orientation, and scheduling
  • Maintain volunteer and foster records accurately and confidentially
  • Develop and support volunteer engagement and retention programs
  • Assist with volunteer coordination for shelter events and activities
  • Assist with community outreach and fundraising events
  • Support adoption events and public engagement activities
  • Respond professionally to questions from volunteers, fosters, and members of the public
  • Promote events, volunteer opportunities, and foster recruitment efforts on social media to increase community engagement and participation
  • Collaborate with shelter staff to support animal care and operational needs
  • Assist with additional duties and special projects as assigned

Required Qualifications
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to organize schedules, records, and multiple tasks efficiently
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Comfortable working with animals and the public in a shelter environment
  • Basic computer and administrative skills
  • Passion for animal welfare and community engagement

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience coordinating volunteers, foster programs, or community outreach
  • Experience working or volunteering in animal welfare or nonprofit organizations

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods as needed
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, and lift supplies or animal-related items
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 40–50 pounds

PET CARE SPECIALIST

Position Type: Part-Time/Hourly
Position Location: Onsite

Reports To: Adoption and Animal Care Lead

Position Summary: Under general supervision, the Pet Care Specialist is responsible for providing daily care for animals at the shelter while maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy environment. This position supports the overall well-being of shelter animals through proper sanitation, feeding, enrichment, and compassionate handling of animals and interactions with the public.

The Pet Care Specialist works closely with the Adoption and Animal Care Lead and other Pet Care Specialists to ensure quality care and efficient shelter operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Clean and disinfect dog kennels and cat cages
  • Feed animals and provide fresh water daily
  • Handle and move animals safely while ensuring the safety of animals, staff, volunteers, and the public
  • Spot clean animal enclosures and walkways as needed throughout the day
  • Operate washer, dryer, and dishwasher to clean animal bedding, food bowls, and water bowls
  • Prepare and set up animal enclosures with appropriate items to maintain comfort and safety
  • Provide enrichment activities and attention to support animal wellbeing
  • Maintain cleanliness of the shelter building, grounds, and animal housing areas
  • Assist citizens with questions regarding specific animals and help educate potential adopters on appropriate pet matches
  • Load and move supplies and materials as needed
  • Report to work on a regular and timely basis
  • Assist with additional shelter tasks and responsibilities as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • General knowledge of the overall care and handling of animals
  • Ability to communicate professionally with the public, staff, and volunteers
  • Ability to maintain simple records and complete daily tasks accurately
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
  • Compassion for animals and commitment to animal welfare

Physical Requirements
  • Frequent standing and walking throughout the workday
  • Ability to squat, bend, kneel, pivot, and lift regularly
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 60 pounds
